Cissy was a multi-sport athlete at Sacred Heart and an accomplished amateur golfer. She went on to a very successful business career and was a civic/community leader and an early and strong advocate for female athletics. She was an original member of the LCS HOF nominating committee.

The Louisville Catholic Sports Hall of Fame is recognized as one of the premier Hall of Fame's in the country and we are proud to celebrate our 10th induction ceremony on Monday, January 15th, 2024.
It's a night to honor and pay tribute to a select group of men and women who excelled on and off the courts and fields as athletes, coaches, administrators and contributors in the Louisville Catholic Sports community.
Mary Varga attended Assumption High School where she was a multi-sport athlete. After graduating from college, Mary developed a successful business career, remained an avid runner, got married, and became a new mother. In 1997, her life changed when she suffered a traumatic brain injury in an auto accident. After 2+ decades of therapy, Mary has built a new life as an author, a certified personal trainer, an entrepreneur, and serves as a board member of the Brain Injury Alliance.
Bill and Rosemary Hyland attended Catholic grade school and high school in Louisville, got married, and raised 7 children who went on to attend St. Matthias grade school and multiple Catholic high schools, including Angela Merici, Bishop David and DeSales. The seven children participated in athletics in grade school and high school, that included college athletic careers and coaching careers in the local Catholic sports community. Bill and Rosemary’s children went on to forge successful business careers and their children and grandchildren attend and attended Catholic schools while participating in sports in grade schools and high schools throughout Louisville.
Bob’s 40-year coaching career includes high school and college coaching positions before moving to Louisville in 2000 to become the head coach at Trinity High School. His 231-42 head coaching record is punctuated by 15 Kentucky State Championship titles, a national championship and multiple coach of the year awards on a national and state level. In addition to being recognized as the most successful High School football coach in Kentucky state history and one of the most successful high school coaches in the nation, Bob was a teacher throughout his career.
Mark Evans was a multi-sport coach at Mercy Academy, winning district, regional titles and Ky State Championship titles in multiple sports (basketball and softball) in which only a few coaches can lay claim. Mark also had a distinguished career as the Athletic Director of Mercy for over 2 decades and helped build one of the most dominant female athletic programs in Kentucky and the region. He was also a teacher throughout his career.
Kent is a graduate of St. Margaret Mary Grade School and St. Xavier High School. Kent is a six-time Kentucky Sportscaster of the Year recipient, in addition to multiple Journalism accolades and Kentucky Emmy awards. After working 6 years at WLKY TV in the sports department, Kent moved to WAVE TV where he worked for 20 plus years, gaining recognition as one of Louisville’s most knowledgeable, trustworthy and authentic sports journalists. Kent retired in 2022 from his position as sports director at WAVE TV and after a brief hiatus, moved back to WLKY as a sports anchor. Kent was an original member of the LCS HOF nominating committee and Emcee/Host of the HOF for 9 years.
A graduate of St. Xavier, Charlie was a celebrated basketball player for St. X and went on to play collegiate basketball at Ohio Northern University. Charlie had a long and distinguished coaching career that spanned 42 years. His coaching career began at Mercy Academy where he would lead the team to multiple district and regional titles and a state runner-up in 1982. He then moved to Bellarmine where he coached the women’s team for 14 years before being offered the men’s coaching position. After 4 years of leading the men’s team he moved to Holy Cross High School as the girls’ coach and then spent 15 years at Spalding University as the women’s coach before retiring. Charlie’s team made multiple NCAA tournament appearances at Bellarmine and Spalding.
Debbie is recognized as having significantly raised the profile of field hockey within the state of Kentucky and on a national level. As Assumption’s head field hockey coach for 29 years, she amassed a record of 568 wins along with 24 regional titles and 10 state championships. Debbie won multiple coaching titles including Kentucky coach of the year, Midwest and West region coach of the year. Debbie continues to teach science at Assumption as she has for 35 years.
